This fulfills a long-time dream for myself as a high school teacher and for many of the supporters of the National Memorial. Back when the memorial was dedicated, I announced that I was working on a High School Unit curriculum around the book and memorial for teachers. Some attendees donated hundreds of dollars toward the effort. A few years later, I completed part of the project with more than 30 pages of guidance for teachers from 9th to to 11th grade (Lexile scores). But I didn't take it any farther than there.
That same year, I had a bunch of books that I could not take on the plane and so I left them with my friend April in Las Vegas. She faithfully held on to them for years. This year, I mentioned the extra books to my girlfriend Amy and she said I should donate them and it all clicked! I search for a Las Vegas High School teacher using google and found Mr. D'Silva who enthusiastically accepted.
"Our school is very economically challenged, so we greatly appreciate the donation," D'Silva said.
The 25 books represent a donation of approximately $500. He plans to provide his lesson plan and I have offered to speak to his class regarding the process of writing. It's not about the money though. Every once in a while I get a check for $20, but the dividends are beyond any monetary. The curriculum development, videos and donations are about a higher calling: teaching our children about our local history, the sacrifices of our war heroes, about the impacts of government secrecy, the power of technology and information and trans-generational war trauma.
The next step is producing an audio book. This has become a life-long project. There is one project we still want to accomplish, getting site markers placed at the crash site so that it can remain largely untouched. Aviation experts as outlined in the Nevada Magazine article say only 10 percent of crash sites around the nation are as complete as this because of the remote and rugged terrain.
Oh, and if you are looking for some thrills this Halloween, some sections in the book are also haunting. I wont ruin it. Now you can get a copy at my store as well. Please enjoy.
